Climate change and emissions threaten health: 8,000 deaths from particulate matter

There is a close link between the achievement of climate goals and public health. Trends in climate change imply an unacceptable risk to the health of the world's population today and in the future. The same is true for the lack of progress in reducing emissions of harmful particles and gases.

An international group of scientists writes in the report The Lancet Countdown 2018 . The report is the result of cooperation between 27 leading international universities from all continents, the United Nations and international agencies.

Dutch scientists from the eight university hospitals and nursing organization V & VN translated the report, published since 2015, into Dutch situation. Scientists write in our country more than 8,000 deaths each year due to particles,

"It is of course very difficult to indicate precisely the number of deaths caused by emissions from coal-fired power plants", explains Peter Blankestijn, internist at UMC Utrecht and first author of the Dutch version of The Lancet Countdown 2018 . "These numbers indicate an order of magnitude and involve many casualties."

Social Welfare

Dutch scientists formulate a series of recommendations based on The Lancet Countdown 2018 . Governments at all levels, according to scientists, must take into account the effects of all major projects on public health. Do not reduce the number and severity of disease cases should be a priority, but increase the well-being of the population.
