The MC Slotervaart hospital in Amsterdam removes ten jobs from specialist doctors. The hospital is in crisis because of the poor financial results of recent years.
It is hoped that forced redundancies are not necessary. Medical specialists may be able to go to work at another clinic. Employees who can stay will have to do more work.
Doctors have already called the council in May. In a fire letter, they wrote that they are very concerned about how the board members are coping with the crisis. "We believe that the current approach of the Board of Directors will lead to bankruptcy," said in the letter.
But the fear of bankruptcy is unjustified, says CEO Willem de Boer against AT5 and the regional broadcaster NH. "We are going to survive this crisis because Slotervaart has already survived several crises over the last forty years." He admits, however, that he could have better communicated internally about the difficult situation.
At the bank
In the coming years, the hospital will need 15 to 20 million euros for late maintenance of the building. The money that the hospital does not have. De Boer: "We will have to go to the bank for this."
The hospital is owned by health care contractor Loek Winter, who succeeded Willem de Boer in 2013. They wanted take charge of five hospitals within five years to make health care more efficient. But he stayed with two hospitals.
