RTL confirms its opposition to RTL Nieuws. Hackers had previously introduced mass-divided email addresses and passwords in automated RTL accounts
. This allowed them to access private data from users of various RTL services such as Videoland, Buienradar and RTL Nieuws.
The e-mail addresses and passwords they used had already been caught in hackers, including LinkedIn, Dropbox and eBay.
Since many people still use the previously disclosed identification information, criminals have access to these accounts.
RTL Accounts
Hackers have opened 32,000 RTL accounts. There, they had access to the full name, the e-mail address, the home address and the place of residence. This data was not completely complete with all accounts. In these cases, less data was leaking.
RTL did not have sufficient protection, which resulted in the massive introduction of combinations of passwords and e-mail addresses. This protection will soon be added to RTL's websites, confirms the company.
No Details of Payments
As a precaution, RTL locked all affected accounts until users changed their password. No payment data was stolen, says the company. RTL reported the leak to the Dutch Data Protection Authority and informed all relevant accounts.
"Attempts to connect to old roaming data on the Internet have been attempted," says Nadine van Herten, Privacy Officer at RTL. "If people use the same passwords for different sites and do not change them regularly, they may be abused, in which case 32,000 RTL accounts are connected."
Change Password
The Have I Been Been Pwnd website allows you to check if the passwords of your online accounts have been disclosed. Is that the case? Then it is important to adjust this password everywhere. It is wise to use different passwords for different online services.
