David Byrne – 4-11 – AFAS Live

All who attended Down The Rabbit Hole spoke of the "Year Concert". This qualification was also heard tonight after the David Byrne concert, after his performance in AFAS Live.

After his successful performance at the Beuningen Festival, Byrne returns tonight for a regular stopover on his US tour Utopia, in a sold-out AFAS Live movie. The former leader of Talking Heads played in the Netherlands for the last time 9 years ago, but his fans, who also saw the Talking Heads, given the average age, did not Had not forgotten. Given the number of cards requested, Mojo could easily have filled the room again if he was not to arrive in Paris a day later. The solo artist Byrne, still musically relevant and adventurous since the disintegration of Talking Heads, is proving more popular than ever.

The performance is part of the American Utopia tour, based on his album American Utopia, released this year. A provocative title in Trump America. Now the American has never been opposed to political statements. In his music, of course, both in Talking Heads and in his solo career, but also in interviews or in his wonderful book How Music Works. This is also the case tonight, as for example during the closing of Hell You Talmbout, a reprise of
Janelle Monáe in which are mentioned the names of Americans of color killed by police violence.

What's happening before is a feast just as impressive as it is joyful for the senses and the hips. From the moment Byrne enters the scene and begins with the Lord, the corners of the mouth rise. As a professor of dispersed neuropsychology, he gives a lesson in anatomy of singing with a set of plastic brains, while around him, 9 musicians and 2 dancers / background singers emerge scenes (a sort of curtain of rain). All tightly in the same costume as Byrne, just like him barefoot. The connoisseur knows this: Byrne works from concepts. His performances are therefore always more than a mere artist who simply plays his songs. Byrne is an artist, and he proves it once again tonight in a surprisingly simple show in terms of means, but that makes full use of the power of music.

The following is a performance in which he draws heavily from his work with Talking Heads, supplemented by songs from his latest album. All the ingredients of his rich career come back, elements ranging from world music to punk, funk and avant-garde Talking Heads. The flirting with Byrne's musical in Here Lies Love, his album with Fatboy Slim, is reflected in the choreography that elevates performance to a higher level. The show is directed in a choreography in which the differences of the musicians are expressed, without violating the whole. In addition, the musicians move wirelessly on the stage with mobile instruments, generating enormous momentum. For example, the drums were cut and divided into three percussionists. Several multi-instrumentalists also play berimbau or tama, for example. There is dancing, jumping, walking, running, liar and parade like in a carnival parade. "Are you really playing live here?" "Yes," Byrne assures him from the scene, even though this question does not concern his voice, which fails regularly. As a demonstration, he presents the musicians who built together Born Under Punches (Talking Heads).

Byrne's American utopia is on stage here. It's beautiful Here, an inclusive world is on the shelves, in which differences are accepted, accepted, strength and individuality used to create together something that goes beyond individual elements. Everyone wears the same outfit and is part of everything, but his role and his individuality are unique, in appearance, gender and nationality ("There are 3 Brazilians in this group, and without them, this show would not be possible ", says Byrne midway), instrument and mode of movement. A moment dances and plays each for himself, then again in small groups, to move as a team at a fixed time. It looks fun, it rocks, there is something to see everywhere and the fun of the game disappears, even if the whole show is set. And this for a seated audience, who constantly hesitates between standing and dancing or sitting. If then the last song of the Burning Down The House bonus is used, the evil is settled and everyone dances. This American utopia also fits perfectly into the Dutch polder.
