The Ebola epidemic in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo is second in importance, the Congolese Ministry of Health reported Thursday night. Since then, 426 people have died as a result of the disease.

Congo has had ten epidemics since the discovery of the virus in 1976. The disease is spread through contact with body fluids and causes high fever, vomiting, diarrhea and bleeding. Most epidemics kill more than half of infections.
"This tragic step shows how difficult and serious the epidemic is," said Michelle Gayer, director of the first aid department of the International Rescue Committee (IRC). . "And the end is not in sight yet."
