Eighteen students and teachers certainly died Thursday on the Jordanian side of the Dead Sea. They were killed by a sudden flood due to heavy storms.
The bus they were sitting in was swept away by the road. According to local authorities, at least 22 other people were injured. The state of emergency was declared in the affected area
The victims were surprised by the swirls of water during a school outing. They were part of a group of 44 people who were heading to a hot spring in the popular Zara Maeen area.
In addition to children and teachers, other tourists may have been trained. It is unknown whether there are missing persons. It is feared that the death toll will increase further. The search for survivors is still ongoing.
According to media reports, health professionals have up to now put 34 people safe. Some of the injured people at the hospital are in bad shape. A major rescue operation was quickly launched with the help of helicopters.
Units of the Jordanian army were sent to the disaster site for support. At the request of Amman, Israeli soldiers provide assistance with helicopters.
