A security breach in Steam resulted in street codes allowing access to all deck games

The bug was discovered by Ukrainian researcher Artem Moskowsky, written ZDNet . He reported it to Steam in August, after which it took several days to seal the leak. An error has recently been made public.

The leak was discovered in SteamWorks, a platform for developers to create Steam features in games. The tool is also accessible to other users.

Steam works with CD keys to activate games installed on Steam. Normally, these codes only work if the user owns the games. Moskowsky could bypass this blockade with a relatively simple modification, after which he could enter codes for other games that he did not have.

Moskowsky tells ZDNet that it was a simple bug, but that it "had not noticed" for users normal. With his test, he managed to generate 36,000 codes for the game Portal 2.

By entering other numbers in the system, it was possible to get codes for all other games on Steam . Moskowsky suspects that no one else has used the system wrongly. Before his discovery, Valve had paid him 20,000 dollars (17,600 euros) as a reward.
