Facebook has removed 82 Iranian pages, groups and accounts from its social networks, Facebook and Instagram
. targeting users in the United States and the United Kingdom. 30 pages, 33 Facebook accounts, 3 Facebook groups and 16 accounts on Instagram
On Facebook, people at the origin of accounts and Iranian pages pose as American or British citizens. In particular, reports have been published on political issues, such as racism and immigration.
Facebook has taken action because of the upcoming elections in the United States. In total, at least one million accounts have followed one of these pages. According to Facebook, about 25,000 people were affiliated with one of the groups and over 28,000 accounts followed deceptive Instagram accounts.
Facebook has not found a link with the Iranian authorities. We do not know who created the accounts and the pages.
In August, Facebook removed 652 pages, groups and accounts from Facebook and Instagram. They have published misleading messages from Iran and Russia and have mainly targeted the United States, the United Kingdom, the Middle East and South America.
