Researchers at the Norwegian Institute of Energy Technology say they have found a way to increase battery capacity by 300 to 500 percent. This would mean that laptops and phones can now run for days and that an electric car can travel up to a thousand kilometers with a full battery.

The method involves a combination of silicon and nanotechnology. For years, scientists have been trying to add silicon to graphite that has been used for batteries up to now. No results for the moment. In fact, the silicon expands during charging so that it bursts at too much volume.

With the help of nanotechnology, it is possible to develop a microstructure of the material more resistant to wear. "We could say that we found the X factor we were looking for, this discovery has enormous potential and is something scientists around the world are trying to achieve," says research director Arve Holt. from the Institute of Energy Technology.

Before batteries arrive on the market, they must be tested industrial processes. If all goes well, we will finally be able to use these improved batteries in no time, although according to the Wall Street Journal, there will be a battery generation, which is much better, but not as good that scientists are now predicting.
