The new iPad Pro announced by Apple on Tuesday is a big step forward. A brief first test shows that Apple does not exaggerate much if the company is talking about the "biggest change since the original iPad"
The new design of the iPad aimed at professionals is the most striking. The edges of the screen became much thinner and the home button disappeared. Instead of using a fingerprint scanner, the tablet is now unlocked with a face scanner, just like the iPhone X, iPhone XS and iPhone XR.
The aluminum case has also been renovated. The sides of all previous iPads were curved, they are straight with the new iPad Pro. This is reminiscent of a modern version of the design of the iPhone 4. The new sides are nice to hold, and because of the rounded corners of the device, the iPad Pro does not have the # 4 Air too block.
5.9 millimeter diameter, the new iPads are also beautiful and thin. It is striking that there is still a big camera in the back. The material of this camera has not changed compared to the previous generation iPad Pro.
Unlocking with facial recognition
The thinner edges of the screen allow your hands to fall slightly on the screen when you hold the iPads. Fortunately, this does not seem to be a problem in practice: the Apple software recognizes that the edges of the touch screen are not affected in a conscious manner, and the contact is ignored.
If the new iPads are held horizontally, it does not matter. possible that your hand falls on the camera. Then, it is no longer possible to unlock the device via Face ID technology. It's a bit awkward, but fortunately there is a message that says the camera is covered by hand. The recognition of faces also seems to work well, as on the iPhone
The LCD screen of the iPad Pro has been further improved, according to Apple, with the technology of "liquid retina" also available on the iPhone XR. Without having the old iPad Pro at your fingertips, it's hard to see if it's a big improvement, but the new version's display is at least very clear and the colors splash on the screen.
The case is also a new processor, the A12X Bionic. For the average user, it will probably be difficult to notice the improved performance of this chip. The old iPad Pro was already very fast and in some tests it could compete well with Apple's MacBooks. What is certain is that the iPad Pro will again offer performance similar to that of a laptop.
New format
The smallest version of the iPad Pro was equipped with a 10.5-inch screen, or 11 inches. Nevertheless, the circumference of the device remained about the same. The smaller iPad Pro still looks like a "normal" tablet, with a size that you can easily put in a backpack.
The 12.9-inch version, on the other hand, still seems very large. This version has certainly become smaller than the previous generation with the same display size – narrowing the edges of the screen – but it still gives the impression of holding a loose laptop screen. The 12.9-inch iPad therefore remains particularly suitable for people who, for example, consider it important to have a great canvas for editing photos or videos, or for recording.
This drawing can be done with the stylus of Apple. , the Apple pencil available separately. For the first time, the stylus can be broken magnetically on the side of the iPad. There he is strong enough, although I wonder if he would not move away from the tablet in a bag. In the Apple test room, there was no way to try that.
If the pencil stays stuck to the iPad, it will also be loaded automatically. A little earlier, the Pencil was to be installed in the flash port of the iPad, a rather bizarre sight that now ends with happiness.
The new iPad Pro have no flash connection at all. Instead, the tablets are loaded via USB-C. This allows you to charge the latest iPhones and iPads with the same cable. The tablet can also be used to charge an iPhone via USB, a useful feature for people who often go on the move with a tablet and a phone.
The least useful is that there is more port for headphones in the iPad. Instead, you must use a USB-C headset or adapter. Ni is included with the iPad. Given the relatively small supply of USB-C headphones, the absence of the "old" port is a problem
Besides the Apple pencil, a keyboard is also available with the iPad Pro. For the first time, it can be used in two different positions. So you can choose to make the screen more or less right. In addition, the keyboard shell now covers both the front and back of the iPad, to better protect the tablet.
Interim Conclusion
Those interested in an iPad Pro will face a big problem: the price. The 11-inch version starts at 899 euros, for a version with 64 GB of storage space. The 12.9-inch variant with the same storage volume costs 1,119 euros. The pencil Apple will cost 135 euros extra and the keyboard will be sold 199 or 219 euros, depending on the format.
Thus, the iPad Pro, as its name indicates, is actually a device intended for professionals. Those who want to use their iPad primarily for reading, Netflixing or e-mailing are better off with the cheapest models of Apple or with the Android tablets of the competition. But for photo enthusiasts, video editors and gamers, or just for gadget lovers who still want the best of the best, the iPad Pro is an elegant innovation.
