The Spanish judge withdrew the warrant for European arrest after Germany decided last week to hand over Puigdemont for abuse of public funds, but not for rebellion. On the latter are heavier penalties. In his judgment, Judge Pablo Llarena did not accept extradition if it only applied to the abuse of money of the government.
Puigdemont is in light waters since the referendum on independence in Catalonia from October 2017. According to the Spanish court, 1.6 million euros of public money was spent for this referendum . Puigdemont was arrested on 25 March in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein as he was returning from Finland to Denmark by car. He has remained with us in exile since the referendum. According to the Belgian lawyer Carles Puigdemont, his client will return to Belgium early next week.
