The dismissal cycle is to be completed by the end of September, reports Reuters . HTC must reduce its employee base after years of declining smartphone sales.

At its peak, HTC sold a new smartphone out of ten. Meanwhile, the company has been surpassed by Chinese smartphone manufacturers like Huawei, Vivo and Oppo, while Apple and Samsung together hold the majority of the high-end smartphone market.

The series of layoffs follows the sale of part of HTC to Google in September 2017. Google then bought about two thousand employees of HTC and a patent package for 1.1 billion dollars. This mainly concerns technicians, who want to use Google to create their own smartphones.

In its quarterly figures for the first three months of this year, HTC recently announced a 55.5% drop in sales compared with the previous year.

HTC has 4,950 employees worldwide after the dismissal cycle. In addition to the dismissal cycle, HTC wants to place its branches for smartphones and virtual reality glasses under the same leadership. Now, these branches are still controlled separately, but HTC sees more future in its Vive VR glasses.
