The Uithoflijn tram, much discussed in Utrecht, was tested for the first time in the station area. A milestone, because the station area was one of the most difficult parts of the multi-million project.
The first tram ran at high speed and was pulled by a special vehicle that could move on the road and on the track. This was necessary because no overhead contact line has yet been installed in the station area. The tram was followed on foot by the staff who checked if the journey was without problems
December 2019
After the ride through the station area, the tram was able to travel alone to De Uithof. A second tram followed later in the night. Other tests will follow until September. Most are at night, but the following month is also driven twice during the day, reports RTV Utrecht
At the beginning of next year, the area should also be given overhead cables so that trams can operate alone. In the second half of next year, the connection of the tram will be commissioned in stages, and the Uithoflijn must be fully operational in December 2019.
Delay and additional costs
L & # 39; Uithoflijn must ensure a better connection between Utrecht Central and several large institutions on the Uithof. The University, Utrecht University of Applied Sciences Utrecht, UMC University Hospital and Center Prinses Máxima for children with cancer are located there
. Ov passengers have until now relied on buses to get there. But buses have too little capacity for the growing number of travelers. This is why the construction of the tram line began in 2011.
The project has experienced so far many problems, such as a delay and a financial setback of more than 80 millions of euros. After the publication of a critical report on the unfolding events surrounding the project, the responsible deputy minister and the provincial secretary resigned.
