The number of low-income households increased last year. The risk of poverty has increased especially among Syrian refugees, but there were also more Dutch people in assistance for a long time, the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) reported Monday.
In total, 599,000 households had to live in poor conditions last year. income, according to Statistics Netherlands. That was 27,000 more than in 2016.
The share of households living below the low-income cutoff for more than four years has also increased in recent years. The percentage has risen from 7.9% in 2016 to 8.2% in 2017.
More than a third of this increase comes from refugees who have been granted a residence permit since 2015. They often depend on the benefits of assistance.
More and more people are living in poverty
In addition, Statistics Netherlands finds an increase in the number of people who have to live on low incomes for more than four years. For example, it concerns the Dutch who lost their jobs in the crisis and who have not found work since.
This problem mainly concerns people aged 50 to 65 years old. This age category is therefore overrepresented in the group living below the low-income cutoff for a long time. The risk of poverty is the lowest for people who have exceeded the legal minimum age.
Limit of 1.040 euro per month
Statistics Netherlands uses a low income threshold of 1.040 euro per month for a single person. In the couple with two children, this limit is set at € 1,960 per month.
According to the statistics office, those who earn less are at risk of poverty.
