In the Netherlands, frozen vegetables are in circulation and may be contaminated with a pathogenic bacterium. The infected vegetables have caused several deaths in other European countries.
The Dutch Food and Consumer Safety Authority (NVWA) warns him.
Contaminated Vegetables
This is the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. The frozen vegetables come from a Hungarian factory of the producer Greenyard. The NVWA wants the companies concerned to remove the products from the market and issue warnings if it appears that they have been sold in the Netherlands. Vegetables are processed into various products and sold as frozen vegetables.
Deceased
Since 2015, at least 47 people have become sick from frozen vegetables. Nine of them eventually died. It concerns people from Austria, Denmark, Finland, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
Low risk of contamination
According to the Nutrition Center, the risk of infection with this bacteria is low. Healthy people with a normal immune system are usually not very sick either. But for young babies, the elderly and the already weak, the consequences can be serious. They run the risk, among other things, of gastrointestinal infections, blood poisoning and meningitis. In pregnant women, the infection can lead to miscarriage or premature birth.
