The number of people who have applied for an Irish passport at the Irish Embassy in London has increased considerably since the Brexit announcement. In the first half of 2018, almost as many candidacies were received as in 2015.
Irish Senator Neal Richmond, Chairman of the Brexit Committee of the Irish Parliament, told the Irish broadcaster RTÉ he received the figures from the embassy of Ireland.
According to Richmond, the number has increased since the referendum on Brexit. In 2015, 4,229 Britons applied for an Irish passport. In 2016, this represented 63,453 Britons and in 2017 it increased to 80,752. There were 44,962 applications in the first half of 2018.
According to Richmond, based Embassy expects 2018 to be the busiest year in terms of requests.
"The British are now trying their luck against the Brexit approach," said Richmond. According to the senator, the British could perhaps also tighten their ties with Ireland. "In this way, we will be able to build a solid foundation for Irish-British relations after Brexit."
Brits whose parents or grandparents are Irish are entitled to an Irish passport and Irish citizenship. According to Richmond, 10% of the British population, with the exception of Northern Ireland, are entitled to an Irish passport.
