What was happy about 9-year-old Djenna when, in February, after almost four years, she had no more bladder infections. A special treatment for which she had to go to Georgia with her mother hit. But now, a few months later, Djenna seems to be coming back. "His old familiar bacteria find him too cozy."
She now dominates the life of Djenne: its cystitis. When she was five, she was suddenly disturbed. The doctor thought that she might not urinate properly. But after a toilet, then surgery and at least 30 hours later with antibiotics, she continued to maintain her bladder inflammation
Alternative to antibiotics
Cystitis did not survive during treatment. "But of course, you can not take antibiotics all your life and this is not a start," says mother Karin Meerwijk. "And then my dad called, he had heard about bacteriophages, an alternative to antibiotics, and then I went there and everything happened very quickly."
"I do not feel obliged to pee"
Money was collected to allow Djenne to undergo special treatment with bacteriophages in Georgia. Explained easily, bacteriophages work as a kind of virus for bacteria, causing them to explode. They do it again and again until the bacteria are gone. In the Netherlands, doctors do not yet work with such treatment. But the urologist of Djenna said: "Go ahead"
"A huge impact"
Once the required 8,000 euros were collected, they went to the clinic. "That had a huge impact on her, she was ten days away from home in a foreign country and the bacteriophage drink she had to take was very dirty."

But that's what happened. The infection of the bladder and the bacteria in Djenna's body had disappeared. "She became more fit, she had more color in her face and her urine was clean again, which had not happened in years."
finally solved. "But the complaints did not take long to come back, and she still pee in her pants." It turned out that the bacteria was back and that the bacteriophages were no longer useful. "This bacteria is just too comfortable in Djenna, that's the conclusion."
So everything was for nothing? "No, certainly not, the abdominal pain that accompanied each day the trip to Georgia does not exist anymore, so Djenna can exercise again and she is more fit than before, for example she did not sleep anymore at school, of course we were expecting more from the trip, but we really won. There is only one solution for Djenna and Karin: wait. "The doctor said that it was possible for Djenna to develop on the disease, we wait for her and wait for her, and of course, she still loves having a bladder infection every day, but she tried it in every case, put it in her pocket. "
What does the RIVM say about bacteriophages?
Many people talk about bacteriophages instead of antibiotics. This is why the National Institute of Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) has also studied this issue. A report on bacteriophages was published in May
. He says that in the coming years, it will not be a good alternative to antibiotics anyway. Too little research has been done to determine whether bacteriophages are really effective in treating infections. We still know too much about security
