DORTMUND –
Michael van Gerwen could not qualify for the quarter-finals of the European Championships on Friday night. The world number one surprisingly checked against Steve West (7-10) and could not recover from an early deficit of 1-4.

With this defeat, Van Gerwen finishes a record-breaking series of 21 consecutive wins under the EC's darts. Mighty Mike had won the previous four editions of the European Championship and was eager to win the tournament for the fifth time in a row, a performance never seen before.

Catch-up race without result
The Dutch ranked first could not have the advantage over West. The Englishman, sixteenth, quickly took a lead of 1-4 and kept the match in his hands.

Van Gerwen was still at 4-4 and 5-5, but in the end, West was not part of the Brabander's catch-up race. This elimination is a huge drag for Van Gerwen who, for the tournament, always proclaimed that he "should be too strong for everyone in Dortmund".
