Microsoft has added a machine learning model to a preview version of Windows 10 that predicts the best time to restart for updates. According to the company, this should prevent computers from restarting at untimely times.
Microsoft describes the new logic of restarting Windows 10 systems for updating as "more adaptive and proactive." The system does not only check if the user is idle, but it also predicts if the user comes back quickly, for example if he just went for coffee.
Microsoft does not provide details on the machine learning model. has been used for some time on internal devices and it works very promising. The model could also be quickly adapted based on the experiments. Microsoft asks users of the Insider version if they want to give their opinion if the system always restarts at inappropriate times.
The new update mechanism is in Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17723, the latest version of Redstone 5. In the fall this version is finally released as the second major update of Windows 10 this year. The update feature should then be available to all users.
In addition, the new preview version includes the blended reality flashlight. This is a function for mixed reality glasses with which cameras on the outside can show the image on the screen in the glasses. This should allow users to take a look at the environment without removing the headset.
