In the area where the Islamic State was active, more than two hundred mass graves were discovered. This was reported Tuesday by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). There are probably thousands of victims in the graves.

A total of 202 mass graves was discovered in the governments of Ninewa, Kirkuk, Salah al-Din and Anbar. The number of bodies per grave differs greatly. Eight bodies were found in the smallest, thousands of people can be buried in the largest. According to the United Nations, there is a good chance that we will discover even more mass graves.

According to the UN, these pits "testify to the heartbreaking loss of human lives, deep suffering and shocking cruelty". In the tombs, it is highly likely that the bodies of people of Iraq who refused to assimilate the ideas of the IS have been executed or have simply disappeared. Among the dead, there would be women, old people, soldiers and agents.

Between June 2014 and December 2017, the IS served a large part of Iraq. The UN previously announced that there were about 33,000 civilians killed under the regime of the IS. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights describes the regime of the country's information society as "macabre". "The IS has led a regime of widespread violence and systematic violations of international humanitarian and human rights law – potentially leading to war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide."
