These are criminals who claim to be a relative of the victim. They urgently need money, with the promise of paying it back quickly. Fraudsters create a WhatsApp account with the photo of the family member. Often, criminals also know where family relationships are and know the tone with which conversations take place.

The Help Center against Fraud refers to the example of a victim who was approached by his "cousin". After a long conversation, he asks for money because he has problems with the bank and he is afraid of having to close his business. The victim pays 2500 euros. Then, the "cousin" returns with two other bills to pay immediately. The victim pays 6500 euros extra.

The support service never recommends paying only as a result of messages. Always ask for a personal conversation, a phone conversation or, if necessary, a spoken message.
