Netgear announced the Nighthawk RAX80 and RAX120 models. These are the manufacturer's first routers that support the 802.11ax standard for Wi-Fi and they are distinguished by their design that resembles a spaceship.
The Nighthawk RAX80 AX6000 has two straight "wings" in which four antennas are processed. . The router can handle eight streams: four in the 2.4 GHz band and four in 5 GHz. The streams can have a width of 160 MHz to 5 GHz, so that compatible mobile devices can use up to 1 Gbit / s. Among other things, Intel's recent 802.11ac network cards support it, under the name of "Gigabit WiFi".
Since this is an 802.11ax model, this means that the router can use the network capacity more efficiently than the 802.11ac variants, among other support ofdm, or orthogonal frequency division multiple access mu-mimo for upstream and downstream modulations and 1024-QAM modulation. The Wi-Fi Alliance wants to name the Wi-Fi 6 802.11ax, but the specifications are not yet complete. Netgear recognizes in small print on the product page that the RAX80 may not support all properties in the specification.
The RAX80 is equipped with an ARMv8 soc with four Cortex A53 cores and a clock speed of 1.8 GHz. There are six Gigabit Ethernet ports, including one port and five LAN ports. The router supports link aggregation to combine two Ethernet ports for higher speeds. There are also two USB 3.0 ports. The Nighthawk RAX80 will be available in December at a suggested retail price of $ 400.
Netgear also announced the RAX120, which will be released in the first quarter of 2019. It has eight antennas, supports twelve streams and has a processor running at 2.2 GHz. This router has also been certified for wpa3 since its introduction. For the RAX80, this certification will follow later.
