The government will donate 2 million euros to educate northern practitioners on the transition from fossil fuel to sustainable energy. The money goes to MBO schools, businesses and municipalities in the north of the Netherlands

The parties involved wish to train 3,400 professionals in four years. This spring, the Economic and Social Council (SER) warned that the energy transition would be halted if shortages of technical staff were not resolved.

The northern provinces are facing a contraction in their population in the coming years. At the same time, many more professionals are needed for the technical adjustments that involve the passage of Gronings gas to other energy sources.

Schools and 45 companies in Drenthe, Groningen and Friesland will teach 2,400 students the latest knowledge of sustainable energy. Thousands of technical enterprise employees and three hundred teachers are also restored.

The initiative is expected to eventually lead to a steady influx of technology students.
