Objections rejected by the inhabitants: one more step

The objections of the inhabitants of the locality against the arrival of the monument to names were rejected. With this, the arrival of the monument in the park along the Weesperstraat is much closer. This has just been announced by the district of Centrum.

Local residents protested against the environmental permit and the hood of 25 trees. The latter was necessary to create enough space for the monument. Arguments against the environmental permit were mainly based on the fear of a massive influx of tourists, buses and additional traffic problems.

103,000 stones
The monument was designed by the American-Jewish architect Daniel Libeskind, known in particular from the Jewish Museum. Berlin and One World Trade Center in New York. The work consists of several walls bearing the names of 102,000 murdered Jews and 220 Sinti and Roma, with the date of birth and death.

The walls, which form a kind of labyrinth, they measure about four hundred meters long and seven meters high. From the sky, the walls of 103,000 stones form Hebrew letters that form the phrase "in memory of". At night, the monument is lit by LED lamps.

From Wertheimpark to Jodenbuurt
Since 2007, the Auschwitz Committee has asked for the arrival of the monument to names. The original idea was to place the works in the Wertheimpark, but the neighborhood did not agree with that. There would be too little space for the monument. In addition, the widow of Jan Wolkers protested against this arrival, arguing that the work did not correspond to the Wolkers Auschwitz monument that is already in the park.

The Auschwitz committee has long sought another place to go to the monument in the Jewish quarter, after which this choice has was decided two years ago in the park along the Weesperstraat. Again, the neighborhood was a disadvantage, but that does not seem to weigh enough heavily for the district. However, local residents can still appeal the decision.
