Bike Shop Paddepoel Cycling in Groningen does not have to pay for the famous "Sunday fines". The traders and the owners association (VVE) of the Paddepoel shopping center met Thursday in Leeuwarden court
At the merchants' call, it quickly became apparent that the judge could not offer a ready-made solution. "Since the HOA has proposed new opening hours, the sting seems to have been removed," said the judge after hearing both parties. "Your best chance to settle this together has come to a solution."
No fine, but an annual contribution
After a suspension of one hour, VvE and retailers came back with a "white smoke" and a deal. VVE condemns the fines of more than 60,000 euros for non-compliance with the old opening hours and the merchants will respect the new hours of opening.
Merchants, even if they are no longer officially members of VVE, will pay the annual VVE contribution with retroactive effect to 1 January 2018. In return, retailers receive compensation of 4 000 euros from the part of the VVE. The already paid fine of 6,000 euros will also be refunded.
New Opening Hours
VVE announced last week in a press release its intention to abolish mandatory shopping Sunday. At the adjusted opening hours, retailers can also close an hour earlier on Thursdays and Saturdays. Before the opening hours are officially changed, VVE members must approve the new hours. They vote on it at the November 12 meeting.
Suspicion of white smoke
Despite the joy of the agreements reached, traders remain wary. The white smoke of the call will only lead to a bonfire if the proposed opening hours are adopted. "It's only when the meeting has taken place and the schedules are actually accepted," Oest said after the session. He suspects that all members of the VVE do not agree with the hours of operation. According to Oest, this is not yet a race. "We had good deals, but now we have to see what happens during the meeting."
