An aircraft of the Kazakh Air Astana company was violently hit Sunday during a test flight over Portugal and could hardly land. After the pilots had first considered making an emergency landing at sea, it was finally possible to reach Beja Airport with great difficulty, 150 km away. south-east of Lisbon, Portuguese media reported.
The pilot had to use the landing three times before he could land safely, the Público newspaper reported. Two F-16 fighter aircraft accompanied the aircraft during the emergency landing procedure. Apparently, after starting, the instruments failed, so that the pilots took control of the aircraft, a Embraer 190, temporarily lost. The crew sent an emergency call, after which some F-16s went in the air to ask for help. The plane turned for a while in sharp turns over Portugal. Before the landing in Beja, ambulances and fire brigades had been erected. The crew however remained unscathed.
