US Secretary of State Pompeo called on the warring parties in Yemen to lay down their arms. He also wants the peace negotiations to start next month.

In Yemen, there has been a four-year civil war between Houthi rebels and the government army. The rebels are backed by Iran, the government army by Saudi Arabia. The latter again receives help from Britain and the United States

"It is now time to stop hostilities," Pompeo said in a statement. He mentions in particular the Houthi bomb and drone attacks and the Saudi coalition air strikes. Pompeo goes on to say that peace talks should be held in a neutral country.

Half of the population needs food assistance

Yemen is heading for a famine of unprecedented magnitude. According to the United Nations, 14 million people depend on food aid to survive in the short term. That's half of the population.

According to the UN, at least 10,000 people lost the war. More than two million people have been displaced in their own country.
