The outbreak of influenza in the first few months of the year has slightly slowed population growth. In the first half of 2018, more than 32,000 inhabitants were added, reports Statistics Netherlands. In the first half of 2017, there were still 35,000.
In the first half of this year, 81,000 people died and 82,000 children were born. The natural gain was therefore 1000. A year earlier, it was still 4000 (82 000 births, against 78 000 deaths).
In the first quarter of this year, more people aged 65 and over died, in part because of the long-term flu wave that lasted until mid-April
Migration
Most of the population growth was caused by migration. During the first six months of this year, the migratory surplus was about 31,000 people. It was the same period a year earlier, but the composition is different.
The number of Syrians who registered in a Dutch municipality fell sharply: from 11,000 in the first half of 2017 to 3,000 in the first half of 2018.
More people of European origin are come to the Netherlands. The largest group was formed by Poland. There was also an increase among Bulgarians and Romanians.
The Dutch population currently numbers about 17.2 million people.
