Samsung presents two high-end compact photo sensors

Samsung unveiled two new camera sensors. These are very compact sensors with high resolution.

Camera Sensors

Samsung has long been one of the only manufacturers to stick to the only camera located at the back. We saw it in the new Galaxy S9 series, but with the Galaxy Note 9 that got the same camera as the S9 +, Samsung chose a double copy. With the new A-phone phones we saw this fall, we're seeing a reversal for the first time. Not only have we seen midrange devices that are no longer a weaker version of the flagship products, we have also seen more lenses on the back for the first time. Four to be exact, regarding the Galaxy A9.

Samsung now seems to really perceive the benefits of multiple lenses, as also shows a new announcement about camera sensors. Samsung has proposed two small but high-end sensors, the ISOCELL Bright GM1 and the ISOCELL Bright GD1. From now on, I call them GM1 and GD1. The first is good for 48 megapixels and the second for 32 megapixels. What is particularly interesting is the compact size of 0.8 micrometer image sensors.

Compact but upscale

The Samsung's press release also speaks clearly about the use of multiple lenses and the challenge of placing smaller sensors in smartphones. "Cameras are becoming a distinguishing factor for mobile devices and smartphone manufacturers are facing the challenge of placing multiple cameras in the fine design of their flagship products" it's the press release. "With a smaller pixel size, these sensors offer greater design flexibility, allowing manufacturers to place smaller modules and more pixels into existing designs."

The GM1 and GD1 models are suitable for a pixel size of 1.6 μm and they come with the electronic image stabilization, they also come with the automatic HDR feature, according to Samsung, they will mass produce at last quarter of this year.

Do you think of multiple camera lenses that we saw in the Galaxy A7 and A9? Are you already looking forward to watching the camera in the Galaxy S10?
