H and was a big question for scientists for years: is there any liquid water on Mars? Until now, we already had evidence that there was frozen water on the planet, but we had not seen any liquid versions yet. Now, however, evidence has been found that there is indeed liquid water on the planet, reports the European Space Agency (ESA) on its website.
On Mars it is currently so cold that no liquid water can exist on the surface. But underground. And that is also the case. Under the ice caps of one of the poles is a lake about 20 kilometers wide
Radar
The water was found on the basis of radar signals that travel through the ground. The signals pulsate to the surface, after which scientists keep track of the time it takes them to return to the spacecraft that they sent. It also measures the strength of the signals.
Using these measurements, scientists can determine what kind of materials the signals have encountered. Scientists now suspect that it is more full of saturated and salty sediments. In other words: the water is very salty.
"This is only a small area of research. It is an exciting prospect when we consider that such underground areas can exist with water, which remain to be discovered. ", Explains Roberto Orosei, principal investigator and senior author of the article on research published in Science
.] Life?
This is not to say that there is also life in this water. This might be possible, but no evidence has yet been found
