"We will take a number of important defenses on behalf of Frank Masmeijer, where we oppose surrender," said Knoops. "It is expected that the court room of the three-judge panel will not immediately take a decision on this matter."

According to Knoops, the session is scheduled fairly quickly. "It has everything to do with the pressure exerted by Belgium on the Netherlands to settle this matter as quickly as possible because of the next call." The call to which Knoops refers is expected from November 16 to the court of Antwerp.

The Antwerp court sentenced Masmeijer to eight years in prison last year and a fine of 48,000 euros for his role in trafficking 467 kilograms of cocaine via the port of Antwerp. The former presenter, 57, was at liberty and was not present when the court ruled that he should return to jail. Since then, the Belgian police search for him.

On Tuesday, October 23, Masmeijer was arrested in a hotel in Breda. Two days later, he was released again pending trial of his extradition to Belgium. He had to return his passport, report regularly to the police and not be allowed to leave the Netherlands.
