Two days after the collapse of a dam in the Asian country of Laos, seventeen bodies were found. The Thai consul reported on Wednesday. "Seventeen bodies have been found so far, but we can not yet estimate the number of missing persons," said Chana Miencharoen, the Thai consul in Laos. The official Laos news agency reported on Tuesday "several dead and hundreds of missing", but there is no official balance yet.

Following the collapse of the dam on Monday night several villages in Attapeu province in southern Laos are flooded. Rescuers must evacuate stranded villagers using helicopters and boats. Local authorities have launched appeals to provide emergency relief, such as food, clean water and medicine. Meanwhile, a race against time is underway to find potential survivors.

The dam, which was still under construction, is part of a large-scale hydroelectric project in which South Korean and Thai companies are also involved. ] [ad_2]
