Spanish justice demands up to 25 years in prison against Catalan separatists

Spanish justice has claimed up to 25 years of imprisonment against nine Catalans closely involved in the illegal farewell referendum of October 2017. Justice demands the longest sentence against former Catalan vice president Oriol Junqueras. He is notably suspected of rebellion and abuse of public money. Junqueras is considered the greatest champion of the referendum on the independence of Spain.

Against eight other Catalans tried for their role in the referendum and its consequences, the Attorney General asked for sixteen to seventeen years in prison. Among them is Joaquim Forn, the former deputy mayor of Barcelona. They are all suspected of rebellion, three of them would have misused public funds like Junqueras

The highest court of Madrid had banned the ballot box; the result would not be recognized in advance. After the proclamation of the independence of Catalonia by the regional president of the time, Carles Puigdemont, the Spanish government dissolved the regional government and the latter fled the country. He currently resides in Belgium

Spain wants to sue Puigdemont for rebellion and abuse of the community money, but Belgium refuses to extradite him. Catalonia is run by Quim Torra since May of this year. The new regional president is considered an accomplice of Puigdemont. Torra has been repeatedly informed of the separation of Spain.
