The Tanzanian government is threatening to buy all the country's cashew nuts in order to give farmers a reasonable price for their harvest. According to the BBC, President John Magufuli wants to avoid a "national crisis" of cashew nuts
Cashew nuts are an important export product of the East African country, but buyers are offering prices so low that farmers have been refusing to sell them for weeks. The government has decided that a kilo of cashew nuts should cost 1.15 euros, but traders do not want to pay that price.
If traders still do not want to pay this price tomorrow, the government buys all the cashew nuts itself. This can cost about 6 billion Tanzanian shillings, converted 2.3 million euros. Yesterday, the president announced that he would use 75 vehicles of the army to recover the tickets.
Ministers' Rejection
As a result of the conflict, the president sacked ministers of agriculture and trade earlier this week. The national cashew nut has also been canceled. Yesterday, President Magufuli accused traders of raising thousands of cashew farmers in the country because of their low purchase price.
President Magufuli promises farmers a fair price. "I want to assure the cashew farmers that the government continues to fight for them," he said yesterday
. In 2013, a similar crisis provoked riots in the south of the country.
