Several forest fires in the US state of California have already caused two deaths. Tens of thousands of people have had to leave their homes. California has been battling big fires for days now. More than 700 firefighters are trying to extinguish the fires, but they are fired by strong gusts, warned Ken Pimlott, firefighter in chief of the local firefighters, Friday.
One of the two deaths fell on Friday in northern Shasta County. A day earlier, a colleague who had killed a bulldozer was already dead. In the town of Redding, they were confronted with a "wall of flames," said California firefighter Jonathan Cox. Because of this so-called Carr fire, in the north of the state, 65 buildings have already been destroyed and more than 17,000 hectares were set on fire. In the region it was over 40 degrees Celsius for a few days.
Ferguson's fire rages near Yosemite. Since the fire, 18,000 hectares of forest have been destroyed. On Friday, the fire was restricted to 30 pct. The popular Yosemite Park will only reopen on August 3rd.
Further south, east of Los Angeles, the Cranston fire erupted on Wednesday. It has already destroyed 4,600 hectares of forest. A 32-year-old man was arrested because he is suspected of having lit the fire.
In a series of forest fires, last year in October, more than 40 people were killed in northern California. More than 100,000 people had to flee. More than 9,000 buildings were destroyed by fires.
