When The Crew first appeared at the end of 2014, it turned out to be a wonderful game. In terms of graphics, the game did not break the pots and, more importantly, in the field of racing, the game fell short of the competition. Yet, The Crew turned out to be more than the sum of its parts and it was surprisingly entertaining to cross the vast game world that the game offered to the United States. As The Crew was part of Ubisoft's transition to the "games as a service" model, the racing game could count on support well after its release, for example two additional extensions appeared in the form of Wild Run and Calling All Units. Now, it's time for The Crew 2.

Although I'm far from being a game designer, doing a sequel to The Crew does not make me happy. did not immediately seem the biggest challenge. Choose again for a vast game world, for example in the form of Australia or, more difficult, from Western Europe and fine-tuning the racing mechanics. Also, as befits a suite, add an extra box of cars, make sure you have a good amount of content and you are pretty much there. The developers of Ivory Tower, however, thought differently here, as it is found in The Crew 2. As in the first part it is still thousands of kilometers of asphalt from the United States that we can make dangerous in The Crew 2.
That does not mean, however, that the developer has tried too easily. You can suddenly cross the huge game world from very different perspectives. You are no longer tied to asphalt and mud to transfer your tours. The most eye-catching innovation of The Crew 2 is the addition of boats and stuntmen. Although it's obviously pretty cool to take a plane ride on San Francisco or navigate the Colorado, this feature mostly benefits from the fast fav feature. During the freeroamen, you can change vehicles at any time, so that, for example, flying over the sea can evoke your favorite boat. Switching between different classes of vehicles is therefore a secondary task.
Races with cars, motorcycles, boats and airplanes are divided into four categories, each belonging to a different family. Street Racing allows you not only to race, but also to drift, drag and hyper car. Offroad will allow you to join rallies in rally raids, rally cross and motocross. With freestyle, acrobatics are at the heart of the discipline of aerobatics, jetsprint and monster trucks. Finally, at Pro Racing, everything revolves around pure speed with the car, the boat and the plane in the power boat, the passenger car, the alpha gp and the air races. In short, the choice is huge and even if all disciplines may not be identical, there is always something in your mind.
Forgotten
Still, it seems that Ivory Tower has forgotten what made The Crew so unique. That the story of infiltration and the police chases that accompany it are exchanged for another generic story about a rookie on the racing scene, is to forgive the match. Rarely do you play a racing game for history. Too little use of the gigantic gaming world that The Crew 2 offers is already much worse. The incentive to go on a discovery trip through the United States is hardly there because the world of gambling is rather empty. The temptation to quickly use the fast travel option to get to events is therefore hard to resist. Even during these races, however, you only see a limited part of the United States. Despite the gigantic map, you still make several rounds in most races instead of driving from A to B. A curious decision, given the amount of space available.
Also, the most important new feature of The Crew 2, the addition of boats and aircraft, could be even more beneficial. Of course, there are many events where you can brake, run on the water or with your motorcycle in the mud. The most fun, however, are the events in which you change vehicles during a race and you tear off the water for a while then you continue to land and run with a car. The number of races in which this occurs, however, is limited to a minimum for incomprehensible reasons.
For a game that lives on the online component, it's an extraordinarily special choice to only launch with a cooperative mode, in which you can run with your crew. A player-versus-player mode will only be added to the game in December of this year. Free, again. It is amazing that in The Crew 2 the emphasis seems to be more on the single player campaign than with the predecessor. Certainly because the AI does not excel in intelligence and that the phenomenon of "elastic bandage" is very obvious.
Conclusion
With The Crew, the whole thing seemed to be more than the sum of the parts and to a certain extent it is also the case of this sequel. Because even though there is more than enough to criticize the game and the developer Ivory Tower has made some remarkable choices, you can still have fun with The Crew 2. The Crew 2 is bursting with potential, but everything do not go out. The hallowed proverb of all trades, master of all, is a striking description of the game and one wonders if the goal of Ivory Tower is to add as many racing disciplines as possible. Of course, The Crew 2 will receive many free and paid updates in the future, but this promise is not really enough at the moment.
