The President of Sri Lanka says he sent the government home because he was the target of a plot to assassinate. Maithripala Sirisena made this statement during a speech on television
President Sirisena provoked a political crisis on Friday by sacking Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. Former President Mahina Rajapaksa is the successor of Wickremesinghes. Rajapaksa is a powerful ally of China.
However, Wickremesinghe does not accept the dismissal and thinks he's still prime minister. According to him, the gesture of Sirisena is illegal and should not be allowed at all.
The situation worsened on Sunday when the sacked Minister of Petroleum tried to go to his office anyway. According to the police, one of his security agents reportedly started firing. One person was killed and two others were injured.
Sirisena suspended the parliamentary session
President Sirisena also suspended a parliamentary session on Saturday, November 16, according to opponents, to prevent parliamentarians to express their support for the layoffs. Prime Minister Rajapaksa asked them to support the new government, but they felt little encouragement.
In a letter sent Sunday, President Karu Jayasuriya urged the president to protect the rights and privileges of Wickremesinghe until someone could be found who can get the approval of the parliament.
On the Chinese Debt
Under Rajapaksa's regime from 2005 to 2015, Sri Lanka was heavily indebted to China because it was financing large infrastructure projects.
Most of Sri Lanka's allies, including India, the European Union and the United States, urged Sirisena to respect the constitution. China, on the other hand, congratulated Rajapaksa on his appointment and denied accusations that the country would be involved in replacing the government.
