Funny, I've been doing this for years  :) I can tell you that it's very useful.

I have somewhere an old HTPC with a broken WIFI connection. Reading data from the HD is fine, but anything that seems to be streaming has failed due to lack of bandwidth and processor power. I therefore have a script that itself provides caching by downloading it as much as possible as quickly as possible, and throwing it when I'm done.

You can solve a game by giving your media players big buffers. systems are generally slower. By writing it to the hard drive and using it as a buffer, you have enough of a small RAM buffer

WIFI is so broken that the connection is unusable for several minutes. Due to the above solution, I have a 10GB buffer, which is more than enough to fill all the defects. From my point of view, everything just happens locally.
