In the Netherlands, about 30,000 people live in modern slavery. That's more than what we thought, according to the human rights organization Walk Free Foundation in the annual Global Slavery Index. At the same time, the Dutch government is doing most of all the countries to combat the forms of exploitation.

According to the organization, modern slavery affects people all over the world. This term includes such topics as forced labor, human smuggling, bondage, child labor and forced marriages. The Netherlands is one of the countries where modern slavery is the least prevalent.

The Most Modern Slavery

Tens of thousands of people were interviewed for this study. In India, most people live in modern slavery, while in North Korea live most modern slaves.

One in ten North Koreans are victims, says the Walk Free Foundation. For example, many people in the country do unpaid work in coal mines. "In North Korea, if your parents work in the mines, you will do it too," says one respondent

. Better control

In addition, modern slavery is relatively common in countries like Eritrea, the – African Republic, Afghanistan, South Sudan, Pakistan, and Iran.

According to the Walk Free Foundation, prosperous countries could do more against modern slavery. For example, the governments of these countries are better able to control businesses, to ensure that public funds end well and to establish good rules for migrant workers.
