Samsung wants to lead the way with this type of announcement, but was overtaken at the last minute. Royole, an unknown Chinese company, asked reporters to hold their own version of the collapsible phone last Monday. Other Asian manufacturers are also busy with the development of foldable phones.
"By showing the device only on stage, Samsung actually claims that the device is not ready yet," says Tim Wijkman, a smartphone analyst at Telecompaper. "The company wants to bring a good product to the market because a significant part of Samsung's future depends here."
Indeed, smartphone sales at Samsung are not increasing as fast as before. The same applies to the competitor Apple. Research companies are even talking about a recession in the telephony market, as sales declined four quarters in a row. The pressure on society to propose innovations is increasingly important.
