The number of Facebook users in Europe is falling NOW

This is clear from the most recent quarterly figures released by the company on Wednesday.

During the last quarter, there were 279 million active Europeans a day, compared to 282 million a quarter earlier. The number of monthly active users from Europe decreased by 1 million, to 376 million people.

Worldwide, the number of Facebook users has increased, but less rapidly than expected. In the last quarter, there were 1.47 billion active users a day and 2.23 billion active accounts a month. As a result, the number of users increased by 1.44% and 1.44% respectively.

Less growth

Growth fell sharply from the previous quarter. Facebook saw the number of daily users grow by 3.42%, while the number of monthly active accounts grew by 3.14%.

Analysts had estimated the growth of Facebook users higher. Daily and monthly active users grew 11% over the same quarter a year earlier.

Scandals

This is the first time in a long time that Facebook does not meet expectations in terms of user growth. One reason for the decline in growth figures is not known, but the company has been criticized repeatedly in recent months due to data scandals.

In March it appeared that Facebook's data had been abused by the Cambridge Analytica data processing company. This has created psychological profiles of the users, in order to be able to advertise specifically for political campaigns.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was later questioned by the US Congress. He also spoke with the European Union. In the first quarter of the year, published in April, the scandal did not seem to have an impact on growth figures

TV presenter Arjen Lubach called the Dutch to withdraw their accounts on Facebook. This was followed by ten thousand users

Sales growth

Facebook's business figure amounted to $ 13 billion last year, or about 11 , 1 billion euros. This is a growth over a year earlier when sales of $ 9.2 billion were reported.

Revenues within the company increased by 31 percent to $ 5.1 billion. Most of the profits were made by the advertising branch of the company.
