The rules for special vehicles must be revised

Do you have an electric bike? It is very likely that you do not know exactly what the rules are. Are you allowed to cycle on the bike path? Do you have to wear a helmet? Is a registration plate really necessary? Clear new rules for new special vehicles on public roads, such as electric bicycles, recreational tracks and stop boards, must be introduced.

The Dutch Association of Insurers claims it, according to a spokesman for the information program Nieuwsuur

According to insurers, the rules in force mean that it is not always easy to determine in which category a vehicle falls, for example a bike or a "special moped". Due to lack of clarity, consumers do not always know if they can use a vehicle on public roads, they must have a registration number and they must ensure the vehicle, said the spokesman.

Except for clearer and more unequivocal rules, the Association of Insurers also stated that the government should better explain what is permitted and prohibited with respect to these special vehicles. "This is also crucial for road safety," said the spokesman.

Builders of such electric vehicles also want clearer rules, in part because they do not know what inspection requirements they must currently meet. "We do not know exactly where the limit is, we barely get out of it," says importer Robbert Albers in Nieuwsuur

A talk about special vehicles

The president of the professional association Electric vehicles has been waiting for years talking about special vehicles with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Public Works. The president however states that for the moment "everything is down" as a result of the recent accident with a relay at Oss, the relay had permission to take the road as a special moped, but the minister l 39; removed after the accident.
