Herbarium Frisicum found hundreds of specimens of the very rare species of dandelion "spotted dandelion" on Schiermonnikoog. "This island is the hotspot of dandelion, almost all sections are there," says Karst Meijer of Herbarium Frisicum in Wolvega. Meijer regularly goes on a "hunt" for dandelions in the Netherlands to map the species. Last Saturday, he and seven men were looking for marsh horse flowers on Schiermonnikoog.
During the marsh horse flower hunt, the group discovered more than this rare species of dandelion. On the west side of the island, they found a dandelion with all the black spots on the leaves.
Taraxacum euryphyllum
It turned out to be the most unique type of dandelion in the Netherlands: the dandelion spotted, also called taraxacum euryphyllum. Fifty years ago, this species was still present on Texel, but it has not been spotted there for years.
The flower is now in large numbers on Schiermonnikoog. "Finding it here is the icing on the cake," said Meijer.
