Traffic jams will be considerably longer in the coming years

We must take into account more and more traffic jams in the years to come. As the economy grows, congestion will increase dramatically over the next five years.

Although the capacity of the road network is also increasing, it is far from sufficient to absorb growth. Motorists will have to stay much longer in traffic jams.

Ready after 2023

This is stated in a report from the Knowledge Institute Mobility (KiM) sent by Minister Cora van Nieuwenhuizen (Infrastructure) to the House of Representatives. According to the study, the loss of travel time for motorists could increase by more than a third by 2023.

"KiM figures emphasize that we must continue to fully manage the traffic growth, "said Van Nieuwenhuizen. Some major expansion projects are expected to remedy the situation, but they will not be ready until 2023.

Rail traffic

A total of 20 billion euros has been earmarked for the extension of the road network . By 2030, more than 1,000 kilometers of additional lanes will be added. 100 million euros are available to prevent short-term traffic jams, for example faster recovery after an accident.

Rail traffic is also becoming more popular by 2023. The KiM assumes that the number of kilometers traveled by the train during this period increases by about 14%. This will continue the upward trend of recent years.
