According to Trump, much progress has already been made to resolve the dispute between the two superpowers. He will certainly bring the subject to the table when he dines with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the G20 meeting in Argentina later this month.

By these words, Trump reacts to rumors that he was already at the G20 summit signing a trade agreement with China. The Bloomberg news agency said earlier that the president had already instructed senior officials to work on the terms of such a paper deal. The latter message was also contradicted by White House economic advisor Larry Kudlow.

Trump had a "long and very good" phone conversation with his Chinese counterpart on Thursday. The conversation focused mainly on trade, but also on North Korea. China also said the phone conversation was "positive". Xi later said he was ready to meet Trump. Beijing also stressed that bilateral trade is in principle beneficial to both parties.

Thursday's conversation was the first telephone conversation between US leaders in six months. The maintenance comes after months of increasing trade tensions, with the United States introducing import duties on Chinese products and the Asian country several times with equal measures.
