The United States sends at least eight hundred soldiers to the Mexican border to prevent a caravan of migrants brought into Honduras from entering the country. The Pentagon confirmed it on Thursday
. US President Donald Trump announced last week that he had informed the border guards and armed forces of what he described as a "national crisis". Trump does not intend to grant "illegal migrants" access to the United States
Under US law, troops do not have the necessary power to exclude, arrest or physically detain migrants. However, they can perform related tasks, such as reconnaissance flights.
This is not the first time that an American president has been strengthening border surveillance by soldiers. In 2006, President George W. Bush sent the National Guard to the Mexican border and in 2010 his successor, Barack Obama, did the same.
According to the organizers of the caravan, more than 7,000 people would be involved. According to the Mexican government, the actual number is about four thousand people.
The caravan is expected to reach the US border next week. Most migrants seem to come from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, countries hit by poverty and criminal violence.
