Utrecht Centraal is again the busiest train station in the Netherlands. This is revealed Thursday from the new entries and exits of the Dutch Railways (NS) for 2017.
At Utrecht Central Station, some 186,000 people embarked and disembarked every day last year , according to the data of OV smart cards. The number of passengers at this station has increased by almost three percent. The second station in the Netherlands is Amsterdam Central, with a 6% increase in the number of passengers per day. The difference between the two busiest stations has increased from about 7,500 passengers to nearly 1,700 passengers per day.
NS announces only the entry and exit of its own trains. In some areas, mainly on the borders of the Netherlands, the NS does not operate exclusively at the stations.
Relatively speaking, the new station of Utrecht Leidsche Rijn experienced the greatest increase. Every day, 2,138 passengers boarded and disembarked in 2017. In the previous year, there were less than 1,000. "You can see that in the first years, passenger growth gradually increases, after which it stabilizes," NS writes.

Among the five largest resorts – Utrecht, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Schiphol – the Schiphol Airport Station has grown the fastest, with nearly 10 percent. Every day, more than 85,000 people have passed through the doors in 2017.
