Water Vechtstromen will issue fines starting this week on violations of the withdrawal ban. Until now, offenders have left with a warning.
The drought has been going on for some time and it is bad news for nature. "We must protect the vulnerable nature," says Rob Spit of the Vechtstromen Water Board
. This is why a number of prohibitions apply, including a ban on withdrawing ponds in urban areas because of fish mortality. But especially in the case of vulnerable nature, the Water Board wants to act harder.
Since July 9, a ban on surface water has been prohibited in much of the Vechtstromen water area. As of July 20, a ban on groundwater abstraction will also apply at 200 meters around vulnerable nature reserves. It concerns three percent of the area of the water board. In the map below, these are the brown areas.

<p> People who live in these areas and want to water their land will have to fetch water elsewhere, which is particularly difficult for farmers. [traduction] </p>
