When the Brooklyn Nets switched the successful business to acquire James Harden earlier this month, they dropped four players in the process – Caris LeVert, Jarrett Allen, Taurean Prince and Rodions Kurucs – which left them only 13 players on their active roster. .
While this is acceptable immediately after the deal, the league does require teams to have at least 14 players, meaning the Nets eventually had to sign someone. Firstly, they signed big man Norvel Pelle to help address their lack of depth in the frontcourt, and now they would be ready to add veteran guard Iman Shumpert, according to Athletic’s Shams Charania.
Shumpert, 30, last played in the NBA with the Nets, preparing for 13 games off the bench with the team last season before being called off. He didn’t sign this offseason and spent the interim working in hopes of a new opportunity that has now arrived.
It might not be the most exciting move, but it’s easy to see why the Nets were interested in Shumpert. Between Harden, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, they have three of the league’s most talented goal scorers and have no trouble scoring points. In fact, in their last game, they lost 147 points to the Oklahoma City Thunder. But as great as their offense is, their defense is just as bad.
Since Harden’s debut, they have been the 27th largest defense in the league, allowing 116.1 points per 100 possessions. Shumpert isn’t going to step in and fix all of these issues, but he’s made a name for himself on the defensive end and can hold several positions on the perimeter. Even if he never becomes a big part of the rotation, that’s at least one more option for coach Steve Nash to try when they can’t stop.
