There comes a point in the lives of many women when no matter how dreamy the hair is, the chiseled abs, or how charming and oblivious a guy looks: if he keeps you a secret, he sure doesn’t deserve you.

Devi Vishwakumar comes to this realization in episode 9 of I have never‘s second season, in which she informs Paxton Hall-Yoshida that if he doesn’t want to be her boyfriend in public, he can’t date her in private anymore.

When TVLine spoke with the star of the series, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, we wondered if Devi could have afforded to send the popular swim team in his luggage. “Definitely not!” she said. “I actually really like this scene because for me it’s the first time Devi has fought back and is really holding on.”

Devi’s statement, of course, leads to more heartache. Paxton says his hesitation is because he doesn’t want to look like a jerk openly dating the girl who overtook him with Ben, then hit him with a car and ended his swimming career. And Devi understands, but repeats that he’s going to have to stop sneaking into his room after dark. (Read a full recap of the finale.)

“There are a lot of times Devi can be too nervous to speak her mind, although she is a very confident girl in other ways,” Ramakrishnan added. “But this is the first time we’ve seen her hold on and say, ‘OK, you know what? It’s not going to work. I’m sorry.’ ” She laughs. “Just like [series narrator] John McEnroe says: “I am proud of the child!”

If you’ve watched the final episode of Season 2, you know that Paxton has finally changed his mind and shows up at the Winter Ceremony, where he makes it clear to the whole school that Devi is his girlfriend. For the record, says Ramakrishnan, she had no idea how Devi’s romantic hijinks were going to play out (“We only know a little in advance”) – but what she loves most about The finale’s big dance scene has nothing to do with Ben and / or Paxton and everything to do with Devi’s friendship with Fabiola and Eleanor.

“My favorite thing about it is when the three girls are together, because they just enjoy each other’s company,” she said.
